The family of Peanut the Squirrel, a TikTok-famous pet, is suing the state of New York over the animal’s alleged "execution."
Mark Longo and Daniela Bittner have filed a complaint claiming the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) unlawfully euthanized Peanut and a raccoon, Fred, on October 30 during a raid on their home.
According to the family, Peanut and Fred were killed to test for rabies despite no evidence that either animal was infected. The family’s lawsuit also questions claims that a DEC agent was bitten by Peanut, suggesting the incident may have been fabricated. Even if true, the complaint asserts the killings were unnecessary and illegal.
Longo and Bittner allege they were denied due process, learning of the animals’ deaths through media reports. They further claim the raid left their home damaged and that the methods used to kill Peanut and Fred were inhumane. “They were executed, not euthanized,” the family argued.
This case has drawn significant attention, highlighting controversies around New York’s laws governing wild animal ownership. Meanwhile, another squirrel incident made headlines in November when streamer CaptainGee was hospitalized after being bitten by a "friendly" squirrel.
