KARACHI: The Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) officials have been reinstated after the Lahore High Court suspended the notification by the sports ministry to dissolve the federation.

The PTF filed a petition after the Federal Sports Minister Ijaz Hussain Jakhrani dissolved the federation for its failure to hold elections on time and formed an ad-hoc committee to take charge immediately. Former Sports Minister Pir Aftab Shah Jilani was named chairman and Munir Pirzada the secretary general of the committee that was given the task to hold the elections within 90 days.

The reinstated PTF President Dilawar Abbas said he had not accepted the ministry’s decision and had not vacated his post.

“I never accepted the decision as it was an illegal step by the sports ministry which has been proven today,” Abbas told The Express Tribune.

According to a PTF media release, the hearing of the petition took place under Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry who ordered the suspension.

PTF sets date for polls

The PTF, following orders by the court, has set November 20 as the date for holding the federation’s election. “We never refused to hold elections and last week in our annual general meeting we decided to hold it on November 20,” said PTF Secretary Major Rashid. He added that the elections of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Association are yet to be held and the PTF would seek permission to hold its general election even if the provincial polls are not held.

“The KP Association took a court stay-order to hold elections and the matter is still pending. If it’s decided before November 20, then we’ll seek permission to hold our elections without it. The hearing of the case would be held on October 28.”

Meanwhile, the sports ministry is yet to decide its course of action on the court orders.
