The ICC cited that Gul's performance in a match against South Africa this year in which he took five wickets while only conceding six runs earned him this award.
The award ceremony will be held on Saturday.
Spinner Saeed Ajmal also made it to the ICC ODI Team of the Year while India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was revealed as the LG People’s Choice award winner.
The announcement came a day ahead of the broadcast of the LG ICC Awards 2013 TV show which will be aired on Saturday.
Australia captain Michael Clarke was announced as the winner of the Sir Garfield Sobers trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year and was also named as the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year.
“I’d like to congratulate all of the winners announced today, who are all highly deserving of their awards,” said ICC President Alan Isaac.

@Daddy:
Rather than talking about Afghanistan, why dont we talk about the last bilateral series in India where Pakistan almost whitewashed you guys. Remember "Aaa raha hay Pakistan" :P
@rahul: Why do you guys don't humble up to the fact that Team India is the team of flat wickets. Give them a green or turning wicket and you see them tumble.......Pakistan team has her own weakness but at least they don't always crumble playing away....
@ABKhan: @Effy:
No no, actually it should be your Muhammad Hafiz, I am still laughing watching that Dale Steyn humiliating Hafiz clip...lmao Btw rather than talking about India & South Africa, you guys should talk about Pakistan's recent match against Afghanistan...hahaha. A team like Pakistan should play with Ireland and Canada instead of talking about big boys.LOL
I don't understand how can Swann be picked ahead of Ajmal in the ICC Test team?
@rahul:
No actually it should be your over rated Kohli, who is fully exposed in South Africa
Great times for Pakistan. First Waqar, now Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal. Now we need to win this T20 and become No. 1.
lol dhoni in test team..seriously? Is he a test player
@Fawas ...You are right brother,it should have been your tuk tuk captain right?
He is a rare gem coming out of Pakistan that is, unfortunately, known for cheaters, fixers, biters, haters etc.
I have not seen Umer Gul misbehave. He is also not involved in any sort of controversy. He always speaks politely. Not an iota of arrogance.
Good role model for Pakistanis.
Well in my view, Saeed Ajmal was more deserving of this award than Umar Gul. By the way, finally some Pakistani player recognized by ICC.
MS Dhoni captain of icc odi team really???? i mean sure he would make an excellent captain if the team plays on flat tracks but come on..... i fell deVilliers deserved that title more than dhoni
Where is the greatest player of cricket history Shahid Afridi? may b ICC was confuse that either he is batsman or bowler? I think he is fifty 50.
Well done. Keep it up!
Ravinder Jadeja...what a joke....hahahahahaha
