Chief Justice's legacy will continue even after his retirement

HYDERABAD: The Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry believes that his legacy will continue even after he departs from the Supreme Court after his retirement.

"There will be no difference when I leave. All the judges sitting there are heroes and they have been giving good judgments," Chief Justice Chaudhry said while addressing a reception organized by Sindh High Court Bar Association, Hyderabad, on the evening of November 8.

The chief justice, who is completing his almost eight years long tumultuous stint at the top position of the apex court on December 12, referred to the judges in the higher judiciary to support his assertion.

Chief Justice Chaudhry recalled how his six brother judges in the Supreme Court stood by him when former dictator General (retd) Pervez Musharraf imposed emergency on November 3, 2007. "When such judges are still in the apex court, no one can derail the system from the path of rule of law."

"I lived my life, I fought my wars but not against poor and weak but against the power, cruelty and injustice," the chief justice said, referring to a quote to sum up his stint in the judiciary.

He added that the historians will judge how the Supreme Court worked under him. "You can see not just one but 20,000 cases which we resolved. I cannot comment on some other cases which are proceeding like the case about Karachi law and order."
