Promoting peace: PUC to hold ‘all-sect’ moot on Dec 11

The Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) on Wednesday announced that it will hold a conference where representatives of all sects will discuss a code of conduct on how to maintain sectarian harmony in the country.
In a press conference, PUC Chairman Hafiz Tahir Mehmood Asharfi said that the council has successfully taken on board all four sects along with the government of Punjab on the nine-point code of conduct. A conference is scheduled to be held in Lahore on December 11, during which the sects will deliberate on how to move legislation on the code.
Asharfi said that the council aims to get legal cover for its mutually agreed nine-points from the provincial assemblies of the country.
He highlighted that the Punjab government has on nine out of the 15 initially proposed points of the code of conduct. In the next step, he said the PUC will devise a strategy on how to convince provincial governments to move bills on this framework.
He said that the council will also discuss the launch of an awareness campaign within various sects at the upcoming conference.
