HYDERABAD:

A shutter-down and wheel-jam strike was observed in parts of Sindh on Wednesday against the Pakistan Protection Ordinance on the call of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM) and Jeay Sindh Arisar group.

Tando Muhammad Khan, Badin, Jamshoro, Umerkot and Dadu districts remained completely shut while a partial strike was observed in Matiari, Hyderabad, Thatta, Sanghar and Benazirabad.

“The ordinance is against the basic principles of justice as it robs the suspect of the right to appeal,” said JSQM vice-chairperson Dr Niaz Kalani. He opposed the powers given to the law-enforcement agencies under the ordinance, including killing a person on suspicion of involvement in anti-state activities. He claimed that around 1,000 workers of their have been arrested from across Sindh on the eve of the strike. The police admitted the detention of over 100 suspects in Hyderabad region. SSP Fida Hussain Mastoi said that around two dozen suspects have been arrested in the district alone.
