MUZAFFARABAD:

At least 15 people were injured when unknown miscreants pelted stones at an Ashura procession on Friday in Mirpura Athmuqam, Neelum Valley, some 50 kilometres from Muzaffarabad.

According to the police, the Ashura procession was on the way to its final destination when near Takiya Mirpura, a group of miscreants pelted stones on the procession, injuring  15 mourners in the process.

The injured mourners were rushed to District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Doctors said all the injured are in stable condition. Later, mourners staged a protest and blocked the main Neelum Valley road. They chanted slogans against the negligence of police officials. After registering an FIR, the police arrested 10 alleged miscreants. Jafriya Council President Syed Mazhar Naqvi accused the administration of backing the miscreants. The district administration rejected the allegations of the Jafriya Council, saying the mourners had not followed the security plan provided by the district administration to ensure a peaceful procession.
