GILGIT: Police in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) have registered a case against regional health minister Gulbar Khan for threatening a government official of ‘dire consequences’.

“The case has been registered on a complaint lodged by Tangir Valley Assistant Commissioner (AC) Asim Raza,” said a Chilas Town police official on Sunday

According to the police, AC Asim Raza accused Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) senior leader Gulbar Khan of threatening him after a verbal altercation a few days ago. Khan, a resident of Diamer Valley, became part of Mehdi Shah’s G-B cabinet after an alliance was struck between the JUI-F and Pakistan Peoples Party.

Both officials had a run in on the eve of Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif’s visit to Diamer Bhasha Dam last week.

While the visit could not materialise due to bad weather, the health minister was angered as the commissioner had allegedly not shared details of the PM’s visit with him.

According to another account, the cause of bitterness between Raza and health minister was the posting of an official, who also happens to be a political opponent of Khan, without his consent.

Minister for Works Bashir Ahmed, who was present when the spat occurred, intervened and broke off the fight.

According to Diamer SP Tanveer Ahmed, action against the minister may be taken anytime in the coming days. “

However, sources privy to the development claim Gulbar Khan has taken up the issue with the chief minister. If the issue remains unresolved, the minister may face arrest after Muharram.
