KARACHI:

A search operation, conducted by the staff of Malir prison late Friday night, led to the recovery of narcotics from several inmates.

The deputy superintendent of the district prison in Malir, Shakir Shah, confirmed that a small quantity of narcotics was seized from about eight prisoners in Malir jail. “The drugs were found hidden in their clothes and other belongings.”

Shah said that all these prisoners were drug addicts and they had been provided with the narcotics by their peers when they would go to the court for their hearings. He added, however, that no other banned substance or items such as mobile phones, laptops or weapons were found.

The deputy superintendent said that a case has been registered against the prisoners for the possession of drugs at the Shah Latif police station. The prisoners are currently being kept in solitary confinement.  The prison is home to around 3,010 prisoners, many of whom are reportedly drug addicts.
