The Environment Protection Department on Friday issued 13 show-cause notices to seven departments on charge of polluting environment by discharging poisonous effluents in Paharang and Maddoana drains.


Muhammad Umar, an EPD spokesman, said the department had conducted a survey and learnt that more than 70 mills and factories were discharging poisonous effluent in Paharang and Maddoana drains without treating the waste water.

He said 120 million gallons of waste water was being discharged in Paharang drain by factories, mills and the Water and Sanitation Agency. Only 25 million gallons of waste water out of this was being treated at Chakera Treatment Plant before being discharged into Paharang drain.

Umer said 230 factories and mills were discharging their waste in Maddoana drain without treating it.

The spokesman also said that after a comprehensive survey, the EPD had issued 13 show-cause notices to seven departments. These include WASA, the Public Health Engineering Department, the drainage authority, and the Jaranwala, Samundri, Tandlianwala and Chak Jhumra TMAs.
