K-P Home Secretary Syed Akhtar Ali Shah has directed senior police officials across the province to launch a crackdown against anti-social elements in order to ensure foolproof security during Muharram.
In a statement issued on Friday, Shah ordered law enforcement officials to keep Afghan refugees confined to their camps and not allow them to enter the cities. He also directed the officials to launch a drive against Afghan nationals illegally residing in Pakistan or attempting to enter the country without documents.
The officers were further instructed to enforce the ban on pillion riding, public display of weapons, vehicles with tinted windows, unnecessary use of loudspeakers and provocative speeches during Muharram, and to take strict action against violators.
“All divisional officers, regional police officers, deputy commissioners and district police officers (DPOs) should visit imambargahs and other sensitive sites within their jurisdiction to monitor security measures,” the statement read, adding relevant officers would be held responsible if any untoward incident occurred in their areas.
Tank
Tank DPO Anwar Saeed told media a joint security plan had been finalised by police, security forces and Frontier Constabulary (FC) for Muharram.
The DPO said because of the geostrategic location of Tank district, which shares boundaries with Frontier Region (FR) Tank and South Waziristan Agency, heightened security measures had been adopted to thwart any possible terror attacks.
“FC check posts have been established along the district’s border with FR Tank and South Waziristan to check all vehicles coming through. Even pedestrian routes are under strict watch,” he informed.
As part of Muharram security measures, pillion riding and public display of weapons have been banned in Tank district under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Moreover, foolproof security has been provided to imambargahs and other sites of religious significance.
DI Khan
Joint security check posts of police and security forces have been set up in the district while army officials have been deployed in three sensitive locations of the city.
People have been directed to keep their CNICs with them at all times while government employees have been instructed to carry service cards. All vehicle owners have also been told to keep their driving licences with them.
Officials assigned Muharram duties were told to obtain security passes from the DPO office. Similarly, visitors residing in hotels, guest houses or hostels have been told to inform the police of their presence.
KTH on high alert
The administration of Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) in Peshawar finalised arrangements on Friday to cope with any emergency situation during Muharram.
KTH Chief Executive Officer Inayat Shah Roghani presided over a high-level meeting and directed the hospital staff, including nurses, doctors and paramedics, to be on duty round the clock. He further instructed the staff to make operation theatres functional and to keep the mass emergency unit open and equipped with all the medicines needed in case of emergencies.
The CEO also said the hospital would place two fully-equipped ambulances along with nurses, doctors, paramedical staff and stretcher carriers at the disposal of the city police chief.
