Strict security: Bomb defused in Momin Town

Sectarian literature seized in raid on house.

PESHAWAR: Police foiled a sabotage bid in Momin Town on Friday and defused an improvised explosive device (IED) weighing two kilogrammes.

Paharipura police said the homemade bomb had been planted along the roadside in the highly-populated and congested area, adding it was spotted by the locals who subsequently informed the police. Police then cordoned off the entire locality and diverted all traffic to other routes, while the bomb disposal squad (BDS) was called in to decommission the device.

Police claimed the likely target could be a nearby house of a trader hailing from Bajaur. A police official said there was a hand-written letter attached to the device which warned of a series of bomb blasts in the coming days. “This letter was from a banned outfit based in Khyber Agency,” he added.



Meanwhile, Yakatoot police raided a house on Phandu Road and seized bundles of sectarian literature stored there. Police also arrested three people including the general manager of a local publishing company and registered an FIR against Jamshed Khan, Muzamal and Tehseenullah.

“They (the accused) were involved in printing and distributing sectarian pamphlets and an FIR has been registered against them in this regard,” said a police official, adding the crackdown will continue in the coming days.
