Paying respects: ASWJ demands holiday on Muharram 1
Party commemorates Youm-e-Hazrat Omar Farooq (RA) on Wednesday.
KARACHI:
The Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) has demanded of the Sindh government announce a holiday every year on the first of Muharram to commemorate Youm-e-Hazrat Omar Farooq (RA).
The party organised a rally to commemorate the day on Wednesday, when hundreds of ASWJ activists and supporters, sporting flags and banners, made their way through different areas of the metropolis and gathered at Regal Chowk to stage a sit-in. ASWJ Karachi chief, Maulana Aurangzaib Farooqui addressed the participants.
The leadership of ASWJ, formerly known as Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, demanded of the government to observe the birth days and death anniversaries of the Khulfa-e-Rashideen at state level. They also shouted slogans against the targeted killings of AWSJ activists in the city and the failure of the police to arrest their killers.
In his address, Maulana Farooqui questioned the role of the police and the Sindh government and asked them why their rally was not been allowed to pass through Numaish Chowrangi. “They [the police] told us that there is a possibility of terrorist attacks there,” he exclaimed.
Farooqui demanded of the governor and the chief minister to announce a holiday on Muharram 1 in commemoration of Youm-e-Hazrat Omar Farooq (RA). “If the government can announce a public holiday on Muharram 9 and 10, then why not on the birthdays and death anniversaries of the four caliphs,” asked Maulana Atta Muhammad Deshani.
Maulana Allah Wasaya Siddiqui and other leaders of the ASWJ also addressed the rally. The law enforcement agencies closed the roads along the route of the rally, causing massive traffic jams in the areas surrounding Mazar-e-Quaid, Lines Area, New MA Jinnah Road and Saddar.
