Conserving environment: Marine animals come alive at weekend gala
The two-day event aims to educate people about the marine environment through fun activites.
KARACHI:
Several residents headed to the creek this weekend to participate in a Marine Gala held to educate people about the importance of marine life and the environment.
The two-day gala, jointly organised by Agha’s Superstore and the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), started on Saturday at the Savor Restaurant and Boating services, features different stalls where visitors could gain information about the varieties of marine life that inhabit Pakistan’s waters and the role of the common man in conserving the species.
Volunteers disseminated information on marine conservation while various activities were conducted to instill an appreciation of the marine environment among the people. “We want to teach our youth about marine life the fun way,” said Syed Aziz Agha, the chief organiser of the gala. He said that it was the only way to save natural resources for the future generation. “We have to inform our new generation of the different kinds of pollution plaguing the sea,” he added.
“We have to start somewhere,” commented a visitor, Dr Qutubuddin Sheikh. “It is a good initiative but we must concentrate on decreasing pollution,” he added.
Rukya Khan, who was attending the gala with her children, stressed that such events should be held more often. “We have destroyed our environment and such events will hopefully bring a positive change,” she said.
