GILGIT:

At least 10 government employees, accused of tampering with National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) data to lower their age, have been sacked in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), sources said on Sunday.

“The step has been taken on the basis of a preliminary inquiry that proved the alteration,” said an official, adding Chief Secretary Younus Dhaga ordered action be taken after NADRA confirmed that changes have been made.

The officials found guilty worked in government departments, including water and power, construction and works and education. These have remained in the limelight for alleged backdoor appointments over the years. The tampering was believed to have been done to prolong service tenure.

According to sources privy to the development, the disclosure is just the tip of the iceberg as the regional government plans to conduct a thorough inquiry with the assistance of NADRA to ensure no such cases are repeated.

“Documents including educational certificates and national identity cards of the suspected employees will be verified to ascertain the tampering, if any,” said the official.
