KARACHI:
Treasury and opposition members have joined hands against the power utility companies in Sindh and moved a joint resolution in the assembly’s session on Friday against the long hours of load-shedding on Monday.
The issue was raised by MQM MPA Sumeta Afzal Syed, who had moved an adjournment motion against power cuts in Hyderabad city. “The officials of Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco) have made the lives of the residents miserable because of the frequent load-shedding,” she said, requesting the speaker to adjourn other business on the agenda and discuss the matter.
PPP leaders Nisar Ahmed Khuhro and Dr Sikandar Mandhro termed the adjournment motion against the rules and suggested the MQM MPA move a joint resolution on this issue. “Load-shedding is not confined to Hyderabad and Karachi alone, but all towns and cities of the province face the same dire situation,” said Khuhro, convincing the opposition MPA who withdrew the motion and agreed to move a resolution. He further said that the adjournment motion was against the rules because the MPA had attached no supporting documents to prove her allegations against the power utility.
LG election
PPP leader and minister for prisons Manzoor Wasan said that it was difficult for the provincial government to meet the deadline, November 27, to hold the local government elections. He was of the view that the provincial government was ready to hold the elections but one of the opposition parties had created a problem, referring to the MQM petition against the LG system. Wasan added that the election would be possible either in January or February next year.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Faisal Subzwari said that the MQM will not let boundaries be changed in Karachi.
