FAISALABAD:

Several labour organisations on Wednesday agreed that they would stage countrywide protests if the government did not take measures to stop exploitation of brick kiln workers.

Speaking at press conference in Faisalabad, Labour Qaumi Movement Chairman Mian Abdul Qayyum said the government had ordered the kiln owners to pay Rs740 for making 1,000 bricks.

“They [owners] were also asked to give social security to the workers and register them... but it was ignored,” he said.

Qayyum asked the divisional commissioner and government functionaries to ensure that the orders were implemented.

“Thousands of workers from Faisalabad, Jhang, Chiniot and Toba Tek Singh will join the protest if our demands are not met by November 22,” he said.
