LAHORE:

The Lahore Arts Foundation Trust (LAFT), in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan and Lahore Arts Council, will exhibit Evolving Imagery, Ukiyo-e and Contemporary Prints from Japan at Alhamra Art Gallery, starting October 23.

The exhibition will mark the LAFT’s 20th anniversary. As many as 57 art pieces will be displayed.

LAFT Director and curator Sabah Husain said, “Ukiyo-e means ‘pictures of the floating world’. It is a collection of fascinating prints produced in the late 17th century, Edo Period (1603-1867), Japan. They were made by carving cherry-wood stamp blocks and mineral pigments on handmade Japanese paper.”

The contemporary print making movement in Japan is a continuation of this traditional art form, she said.

“Contemporary prints combine wood with other techniques like silk screen and lithographs. The aesthetics and visual language of Ukiyo-e prints is reinterpreted by the contemporary print makers,” said Husain.

Lahore Arts Council Director Tanya Suhail said, “This collection represents the pinnacle of Japanese art history as far as wood block print making is concerned. It shows how old traditions have influenced contemporary art,” she said.

Artists and students, especially of printmaking, should attend and learn about the intricate art form, she added.

The exhibition will be inaugurated by HE Hiroshi Inomata, the Ambassador of Japan, and will continue till November 8.
