Violence round-up: Police constable dies in alleged encounter

Around 16 suspected criminals were arrested by the Rangers.

A police constable was killed and another official was critically wounded in an encounter in Sharafi Goth on Saturday. Meanwhile, 16 alleged criminals, including Lyari gangsters, were apprehended in targeted raids in different parts of the city.



According to police officials, the deceased police constable, 40-year-old Bagh Ali, was killed while head constable Munawar Ali was wounded in an encounter with criminals in Sharafi Goth. The officials were on routine patrol near the Sharafi Goth graveyard when they tried to intercept two men on a motorcycle. SHO Ikhlaq Ahmed told The Express Tribune that the assailants opened fire when they were asked to stop. As a result, both officials sustained multiple bullet wounds and Bagh Ali died on the spot. The injured, Munawar Ali, was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where doctors termed his condition critical.

Separately, three alleged gangsters, belonging to Ustad Taju and Mullah Nisar groups of Lyari gang war, were arrested in a targeted raid in Lyari. According to the Rangers’ spokesperson, the Rangers conducted the raid in Singu Lane, Lyari, and managed to arrest the three suspects after a brief exchange of fire. He added that a Rangers’ official was also wounded. A large quantity of weapons, narcotics and walkie-talkie sets were seized from their possession.

Separately, as many as 13 alleged criminals were arrested in targeted raids in different parts of the city, including Bilal Colony, Mehran Town, Landhi, Orangi Town, North Karachi, Akbar Market, Clifton, Paposh Nagar, North Nazimabad, Swat Colony, Rangiwara, Chanesar Goth, Gulshan-e-Maymar and Saeedabad. The suspects were shifted to an undisclosed location for questioning.
