RAWALPINDI: There have been no reported deaths of Congo fever patients in Holy Family Hospital (HFH), In-charge Infection Control Committee HFH Dr Javed Hayyat stated on Monday. Two patients who were suffering from dengue fever were mistakenly diagnosed with Congo fever.

Talking to the Express Tribune, Dr Hayyat said the hospital mistakenly announced incorrect figures because the staff got confused between the test reports of dengue and Congo fever patients issued by the National Institute of Health (NIH). “The hospital administration received information of test reports by NIH on the phone and mistakenly declared two patients positive for Dengue as positive for Congo fever,” he explained.

The first patient suspected of Congo fever was brought to the hospital on September 14. Since then, 20 more suspected patients of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) have been admitted, of which, 10 were tested positive by the NIH. He said only three these patients diagnosed with CCHF are currently admitted in the hospital, the rest have been discharged after full recovery.

Dr Hayyat said there has been no decline in the number of patients suspected of CCHF and dengue coming to the hospital. A total of 139 patients suspected of dengue fever have been admitted in the hospital since January 19, out of which, 15 were tested positive of the disease by NIH. He said the hospital is awaiting test results by NIH of 37 admitted patients suspected of dengue fever.
