LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court on Monday directed the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) managing director to submit his reply on the steps taken for provision of clean water to citizens.

The court adjourned the hearing for two weeks.

Earlier, the court had summoned the WASA managing director on a petition questioning the dilapidated sewerage system and poor of drinking water quality.

On Monday, the managing director told the court that the agency had installed water filtration plants in several parts of the city. He said when complaints about water quality were received, the agency tried to address them as soon as possible.

The court directed the managing director to submit a detailed report about the steps taken by the agency to ensure safe drinking water supply.

Imtiaz Rasheed Qureshi of Save Judiciary Committee had filed the petition.

He said the agency charged consumers for the upkeep of the City’s sewerage system but the sewerage system was decrepit.

Besides, people in many parts of the city did not have clean water.

The petitioner asked the court to instruct the agency to provide better services.

According to a report presented at a conference on Pakistan’s water problem at the Woodrow Wilson Centre in 2006, all water samples collected from the city were found to be contaminated.

The contaminants were iron, arsenic and bacteria.
