ISLAMABAD: Before Shahbaz drove off in a rented Suzuki van, he set Nadeem Akhtar’s body, which he had dumped by the Simly Dam Road in a drum, on fire.

On Sunday, the Islamabad Police claimed Shahbaz confessed to the murder after he was arrested by police officers of the Nilore Police Station.

According to the police, Akhtar’s body was found stuffed in a drum, and burnt, from the Simly Dam Road on August 17, 2013. The Nilore police had registered a case back then, charging an unidentified person with murder, theft, setting fire and robbery with an attempt to cause grievous harm under sections 302, 436, 201 and 397/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Shahbaz, whom police labeled as a “greedy man,” told police that he called Akhtar to his home in Pirwadhai for a “business deal.” Akhtar ran a business of watches. At his home, according to police, Shahbaz stabbed Akhtar with a dagger with the intent of stealing valuables from him.

Shahbaz stole a Rado watch, a gold necklace, a ring and Rs18,000 from Akhtar after the businessman had died of the stab wounds, the police said.

Later, Shahbaz rented a Suzuki pick-up van, put Akhtar’s body in a drum and drove to Simly Dam Road where he dumped the drum. In a last attempt to cover his tracks, the police said, Shahbaz torched the body.

A special police team working under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police Safeer Hussain Bhatti traced down the alleged killer. The team also included Nilore Station House Officer Najeeb Shah and Sub-inspector Muhammad Anas among other policemen.

The team recovered the alleged murder weapon, a dagger, from Shahbaz. Further investigations are underway, the police said.
