Convocation ceremony: After a long wait, NUML graduates awarded degrees

Students who graduated between June 2011 and Jan 2013 receive degrees.

Degrees were awarded to 650 graduates of the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) during a convocation ceremony at the Jinnah Convention Centre on Tuesday, some of whom had been waiting for this moment for the past two years.


Degrees were conferred upon bachelors and masters students who graduated between June 2011 to January 2013 and scholars who completed their research work and qualified for a PhD, M Phil and MS between 2002 and 2013. “I have waited for two years for this memorable day and I cannot find the words to express my feelings,” said Mahwish Ali Shah of the Department of Mass Communication.

The audience applauded a visually impaired student, Muhammad Ikhlas Tariq, who received a gold medal in MSc International Relations. “I’m so happy today: this is cause for celebration. My university has bestowed me with a candle that has compensated me for all my disabilities giving me the strength to move forward,” he said.

Attributing her success to her teachers’ and parents’ hard work, another gold medallist, Azka Khan said, “It’s an honour to celebrate what you have achieved among your peers.”

Training and Evaluation Inspector General Lt Gen. Raheel Sharif presided over the ceremony which was attended by members of the board of governors, the rector and director general of the varsity as well as academia from other universities and institutions.

Chief Guest Lt Gen. Sharif, while emphasising the need of research, said “Civilisations have progressed through inquiry and research and this invariably demands perseverance which is a manifestation of the spirit of tolerance”.

Earlier, the rector welcomed the chief guest, students and their parents and highlighted the launch of new disciplines at f NUML and collaboration with foreign universities. NUML Director General Brig. Azam Jamal assured students that convocations would be held regularly every year.
