KARACHI:

The chief of the outlawed Peoples Amn Committee (PAC), Uzair Baloch who was believed to have been out of the country, has returned to Lyari, The Express Tribune learnt on Friday.

Uzair, who apparently came back on Thursday night, is expected to fill in the gap in leadership left behind by Zafar Baloch, who was killed in a targeted attack allegedly due to some internal rifts in the party on Wednesday night.

According to insiders, one of the reasons why Uzair was forced to go into hiding was due to rifts between him and another Lyari gangster Baba Ladla, who enjoys PAC’s support. The two had developed differences over the Kutchi Rabita Committee and the killings and arrests of the gangsters by law enforcers in Lyari. Ladla has reservations over PAC politics, he added.

“Soon after he [Uzair] returned, he roamed on the streets of Lyari on a motorcycle to show his presence and power,” said a resident of the Lyari. “During his visit, he avoided his close aides, including Ladla.” The aim behind roaming on the streets was to warn the perpetrators to stop hatching conspiracies against him, he added.

Uzair was forced into hiding following numerous raids by Rangers and police at his residence in Lyari after the Sindh High Court ordered his arrest for his alleged involvement in the murder of notorious gangster Arshad Pappu. The court has also issued arrest warrants against Baba Ladla and others as well.

Even Pakistan Peoples Party MPA Saniya Naz confirmed Uzair’s arrival to The Express Tribune. “Uzair Bhai has reached Lyari. I met him last night,” she said. “Presently, he is busy holding meetings with the leaders of the party about future course of action.”

Going to surrender

Sources privy to the matter told The Express Tribune that Uzair is likely to surrender before the Rangers soon. “Our MNA Shahjahan Baloch is also in jail,” said Naz. “To surrender is a not big deal but the main issue is that his life is at risk.” She said his surrender is on the table but only if the government and law enforcement agencies guarantee protection for his life.

Meanwhile, police officials refused to confirm if Uzair was present in Lyari. District South police chief Abdul Khalique Shaikh said he is unaware whether or not Uzair is back in Lyari.

Nabil Gabol nominated

Two days after Zafar was shot dead, Kalakot police registered his murder FIR on the complaint of his father, Muhammad Ali, against four unknown men. Ali said these men acted on the orders of Muttahida Qaumi Movement MNA Nabeel Gabol.
