Mounting casualties: Dengue claims three more lives in Swat

Dengue fever claimed three more lives in Swat on Tuesday, bringing the official death toll to 18 and unofficial figure to 29.


According to Saidu Teaching Hospital (STH) Spokesperson Dr Wasil Ahmed, Sher Ali and Abdur Rahim, residents of Malookabad, along with Siddique Ali lost their lives. Dr Ahmed said all three patients had been receiving treatment at home and were only brought to the hospital when their condition became critical.




“Sher Ali and Abdur Rahim were receiving treatment at home and were brought to STH when they went into dengue shock. Both died after a few hours at the hospital, while 25-year-old Siddique Ali was referred to a hospital in Peshawar, however, he too died on the way,” said Dr Ahmed.

The spokesperson added 142 new patients were admitted to the dengue unit at STH and the total count of patients in the hospital has reached 2,500. “Around 107 patients were discharged on Tuesday, taking the number of patients who have completely recovered to 2,140,” said Dr Ahmed. He added 25 patients with complications have been admitted to the intensive care unit.

According to the District Health Office, the total number of patients infected with dengue in the district has crossed 5,000.



Meanwhile, students and teachers of private schools held a dengue awareness walk, carrying banners and placards inscribed with instructions of necessary precautions, symptoms and treatment of dengue fever.
