The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Australia at the commission’s headquarters in a bid to strengthen educational ties.
Australian High Commissioner Peter Heyward, who was the chief guest at the ceremony, termed the MoU a key milestone in strengthening ties between the two countries.
He stressed on developing more institutional linkages, particularly in the area of higher education.
HEC Executive Director Prof Dr Mukhtar Ahmed said the commission has been emphasising on the need to introduce human resource development programmes to help meet universities’ growing needs.
He urged the HEC to send a delegation of Pakistani universities’ vice-chancellors to Australia to explore new avenues of cooperation.
UNSW Pro Vice-Chancellor Fiona Docherty informed the participants that the Australian varsity is one of the most prestigious in the world, ranked 85 according to Times Higher Education and 52 according to QS World Universities.
She lauded HEC’s efforts to undertake PhD programmes and invest in the country’s youth.
A jointly-funded scholarship programme by HEC and UNSW covers tuition fees, stipends, health insurance and air travel.
UNSW has offered a full tuition fee waiver for successful students, while HEC will provide maintenance allowance, health insurance and air fares.
Scholarships will be offered to aspiring doctorate candidates in all fields.
