KARACHI:
Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) women-wing observed ‘International Hijab Day’ on Wednesday to signify the importance of the veil in the lives of Muslim women. A large number of women participated in the walk from Bait-ul-Mukarram mosque to Hassan Square to mark the occasion. The participants marched behind a banner stating, “Hijab is my right... Pride... And choice.” Later, addressing a press conference, the JI female leaders demanded the government to officially observe September 4 as ‘International Hijab Day’. “The West should refrain from negative propaganda and biased lawmaking against the veil,” said the JI women-wing’s deputy-secretary, Durdana Siddiqui. “Veil is a basic right of every Muslim woman and the Western world should respect other religions.” Explaining the historical significance of the day, JI women-wing’s provincial head, Afshan Naveed, said that France was the first country to impose a ban on the veil which, she said, was a violation of human rights.
