KARACHI: A senior Pakistan navy officer identified as Muhammad Nadeem was shot dead and his Swedish wife wounded in Karachi on Wednesday, police said.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the couple shooting Captain Nadeem in the neck. The same bullet that killed him landed in his wife’s shoulder, wounding her.

"Two gunmen riding a motorbike intercepted Captain Nadeem's vehicle and opened fire, killing him on the spot," police official Tahir Naveed told AFP.

Nadeem's wife was taken to a naval hospital, he added. Her condition is stable, Express News reported.

Nadeem taught at the Karachi campus of the National University of Sciences and Technology.

A naval intelligence official also confirmed the killing.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Taliban militants raided a naval base in the city in May 2011, destroying two P-3C Orion surveillance planes and killing 10 personnel in a 17-hour assault.

Violence

Targeted killings continue despite the prime minister’s arrival in the city on Tuesday to discuss the issue of unabated violence.

Earlier today, a ranger official and three suspected criminals were killed in an exchange of fire in Lyari.

While on September 3, police sources reported that a police inspector, a political worker and an alleged gangster were among 11 people shot dead across the city.

In the first six months of 2013, 1,726 people were killed compared with a previous high of 1,215 in the same period last year, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is currently in Karachi for talks with political parties designed to come up with a strategy to improve the worsening law and order situation in the city.

@farhan: Out of curiosity, I Googled for Capt Syed Nadeem Naqvi and guess what I found. A number of websites had this (incorrect) news that Pakistan Navy Shia officer Captain Syed Nadeem Naqvi was killed in Karachi. And there was one thing common; all are Indian websites. One of them is PTI website - Press Trust of India! And they even went on to claim that his wife's name is Binte Zehra! How could a British lady be named Binte Zehra?! Bottom line; don't believe everything you read on internet!

I am very saddened to hear this news. I had the honour of meeting captain Dr Nadeem, he was a brilliant man. I am only confused by his wife I understood she was British not Swedish
