RAWALPINDI/ ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad Police have impounded 332 motorcycles and 109 cars in the capital during the past week for drivers licence and registration-related violations.

From August 26 to September 1, the police also removed tinted sheets from the windows of 126 cars, whose drivers were fined accordingly. Tinted windows in Islamabad are illegal except when a special permit from the Ministry of Interior has been granted.

On average during this period, the police seized 47 motorcycles and 15 cars per day from around the capital for driving without proper documentation. The highest number of bikes, 64, was impounded on August 26 while 25 cars were stopped in the general hold-up on Sunday, more than any other day this past week.

Around 60 suspects were also arrested during routine search operations in different parts of capital over the seven days.

The police had upped security at checkposts and pickets in and around the capital since before Eidul Fitr.

During the week, the Islamabad Police also deployed 650 trained officers at pickets in the capital, according to a police spokesman. The move is intended to bolster security at the checkpoints after the August 15 Jinnah Avenue stand-off, which saw the police trying to tackle an armed man near the capital’s Red Zone for several hours.

The officers, who include commandos, have received special training in sniper shooting, the spokesman added.

Rawalpindi police impound 2,025 bikes

During a campaign against motorcycles lacking licence plates, the city traffic police have impounded 2,025 bikes out of the total 2,235 booked in Rawalpindi.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Ishtiaq Hussain Shah said the police will show no leniency to violators in this regard, adding, that a same kind of campaign is also being launched against other vehicles in violation of the same rules.

“Any bike or vehicle without a licence plate will be impounded in the future,” he said. In the second phase of the campaign, action will be taken against bikes and vehicles with licence plates designed in ways other than those approved by the relevant authorities, he added.

The campaign was launched in the wake of security concerns in the twin cities.
