Speedy driving: 12 dead, 25 injured in road accidents

At least 12 people were killed and 25 injured in two road accidents in Faisalabad and Khanewal each.


In Faisalabad, a head-on collision between a van and a bus left six people dead and 12 injured. The accident took place on Faisalabad-Chiniot Road.

Rescue 1122 officials said a speeding passenger van ran into a bus near Bhutto Colony. The van overturned and fell off the road. Residents and passers-by rushed to the rescue and called professional help.

Rescuers said three people had died before they were pulled out of the wreck. A child died while it was being given first aid.

They said 14 injured were taken to district headquarter hospital in Chiniot. Two of them were pronounced dead a few hours later.

Dr Ghulam Fareed, duty officer at the emergency ward, said five of the injured were in critical condition. They were referred to Allied Hospital in Faisalabad.



Ten of the injured were identified as Muhammad Ashraf, Javaid Iqbal, Humaira Bibi, Muhammad Khurram, his wife Amina Bibi, Muhammad Rafiq, Shams Bibi, Muhammad Ejaz, Kamran Ali and Faisal Rasheed.


Muhammad Iqbal, one of the witnessed, said that he was on his way home in the nearby field when the van came rolling down the road. He said it overturned twice before it came to a stop.

Rescue officials were called. They pulled out the injured from both vehicles.

In Khanewal, six people, including a child, were killed and 13 others were injured on Thursday. The injured were immediately hospitalised and were later reported to be out of danger.

Rescue officials said a coaster heading to Faisalabad from Sadiqabad collided with a tractor-trolley on Khenwal Road at 3am.

They said six passengers died on the spot. Thirteen were injured. Bodies of the deceased were pulled out by cutting the vehicle’s frame.

Three of those who died were identified as Muhammad Omer and Hira Fatima, 22, of Rahim Yar Khan and 12-year-old Sohail Ahmed of Khanpur. Rescuers said bodies of the rest of the three had been badly damaged and could not be identified.

The injured were taken to district headquarters hospital in Khanewal and Nishtar Hospital in Multan.

They were identified as Mazhar Abbas of resident of Larkana, Mohammad Azam, Farah Bibi and Habibur Rehman of Rahim Yar Khan, Ahmed Khubaib, Naila Bibi, Asad Muneer, Uzma Naeem and Mohammad Naeem of Sadiqabad and Mohammad Shahbaz, Mohammad Saeed and Faisal Khan of Khanpur.

Some passengers told the police that the driver had dozed off.  Police said drivers of both the vehicles fled.
