Crackdown: ‘Liquor baron’, six bootleggers arrested
The police recovered 131 bottles of whiskey and wine during the crackdown.
ISLAMABAD:
The police came down hard on bootleggers in the capital, arresting six people including a senior figure in the capital’s underground liquor trade.
Malik Tariq, considered an untouchable kingpin of the Islamabad bootlegging scene, was arrested after the police raided several houses in sectors F-6, F-7/1 and F-7/3.
Six others — Jaan Muhammad, Usman, Sabir, Javed Masih, Liaqat Ali and Shahid Shari — were also arrested during the raids, a police spokesman said.
Following directions from Senior Superintendent of Police Operations Muhammad Rizwan to crack down on bootleggers, Assistant Superintendent of Police Rizwan Gondal supervised special teams to raid houses suspected of being liquor depots.
Police sources said Tariq was an influential liquor runner and attempts to nab him in the past had led to the transfers of the police officers who went after him.
The police recovered 131 bottles of whiskey and wine during the crackdown. Investigations with the arrested persons are underway, the police spokesman said.
On Sunday, two bootleggers were also arrested and 540 bottles of liquor were seized in Shahzad Town.
