Lack of evidence: Court acquits policemen, others of murder charges
Verdict elicits backlash from the family as mother of deceased tries self-immolation.
HYDERABAD:
An additional district and session judge, Ajlal Hyder Memon, acquitted the Hyderabad Anti-Corruption Deputy Director Khalid Mustafa Korai in the 2009 murder case, which earlier this year led to his removal from the post of SSP Benazirabad.
Three other policemen - inspectors Ghulam Nabi Bhatti and Salahuddin Memon and head constable Hidayatullah Korai - and Korai’s brother Ahmed Korai were also absolved of the charges.
The verdict, however, elicited a backlash from the family as mother of the slain person, elderly Gul Taj Brohi, tried self-immolation outside the press club. She was stopped by the policemen and photographers on site from setting herself on fire.
Khalid Mustafa Korai was the SP Investigation in Dadu at the time the incident occurred in April, 2009. According to the mother, the deceased Amanullah Brohi was a partner with Khalid in a CNG station in Naushehro Feroze. Amanullah reportedly put Rs1.8 million in the project but later wanted to end the partnership and demanded Khalid to pay back the amount he had invested.
According to Gul Taj, the complainant in the case, Amanullah and his father, Mohammed Jumman Brohi, were first accused of kidnapping and then arrested by the Karachi police. Later, Brohi was killed in an alleged police encounter in Moro, Naushehro Feroze while his father was set free.
Amanullah’s 13-year-old daughter, Naina, and a Sindhi news channel’s reporter, Waheed Mastoi, were witnesses against the police but the latter withdrew from testifying in the court. The judge, finding insufficient evidence against the policemen, freed them of the charges.
In February this year, the Supreme Court’s bench hearing the Karachi law and order case had sought removal of the police officials facing trial in the murder cases from their postings. Khalid was SSP Benazirabad at that time and was removed from his posting.
