Students break into FUA VC’s residence

Protesting students broke the vice chancellor’s house gate and also burnt a security van.

FAISALABAD:
Faisalabad University of Agriculture (FUA) students surrounded the university vice chancellor’s house and protested against power cuts and the increase in fees on Friday night.

Protesting students broke the vice chancellor’s house gate and also burnt a security van.

The students allegedly also vandalised a university check post and other college property.

According to eyewitnesses, on Friday electricity remained suspended from 5 pm to 12 pm and students protested near the VC house but their protest intensified after they had a tussle with security officials in the area.

Following the confrontation the students broke the VC’s house gate and security van. Police reached the scene but the students pelted police with stones and the police soon left. Heavy police contingents stopped the protest later near Jail Road.

According to the students, the vice chancellor did not grant admission to more than 300 students despite the availability of seats.

The students said that they would protest on Monday if the VC did not admit applicants for the vacant seats.

University officials said that if the tussle between the administration and the students persisted the university could be closed for an indefinite period.

According to a university spokesman, power cuts were not the university’s responsibility but rather a matter for Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco) to deal with.
