KARACHI: The city would be a lot safer if the government had implemented the Supreme Court orders on Karachi law and order, said Sindh High Court chief justice Mushir Alam.

In a meeting with law enforcers and government officials on Monday, Justice Alam directed the provincial bureaucratic hierarchy to strictly implement the orders to control the worsening law and order situation in Karachi.

The chief justice noted that the provincial government had failed to implement the apex court orders in Karachi law and order suo motu implementation case in October 2011, an official privy to the meeting told The Express Tribune.

He demanded that the government should extend foolproof security to the judges and the judicial complexes across the province, in addition to providing bulletproof vehicles. Justice Alam also asked the officers to ensure all closed-circuit surveillance cameras installed in the city’s red zone were functional at the earliest.

Death convicts’ execution

He reiterated the need to execute condemned prisoners in line with the courts’ orders. Executing convicts on the death row, whose mercy appeals have been rejected even by the presidency, is inevitable to restore public confidence, he told the provincial hierarchy, according to the sources.

Chief secretary Muhammad Ejaz Chaudhry assured that foolproof security would be provided to the judges and the judicial complexes. He requested the high court to state the number of bulletproof vehicles required by the judges so that the government could arrange for them.

Chaudhry informed that the Saddar neighbourhood would be turned into a parking-free zone to improve security in the area. Saddar’s parking plaza would be made functional and a shuttle bus service would be introduced in the locality for the convenience of visitors, he added. In view of the judges’ security, he suggested that an underground parking facility should be established at the high court.
