MULTAN:
A child worker was injured on Wednesday in a fire that broke out at an unlicensed petrol station in Shareefpura.
The fire spread to several nearby shops, damaging valuables and two motorcycles parked in front of them. The injured child was taken to Nishtar Hospital, where doctors treating him said that he would likely survive.
The fire started from petrol leaking from a barrel placed in a rickshaw parked next to a generator. Witnesses said it spread across the fuel station within minutes after the first spark and also reached adjacent shops. Two motorcycles were also burned.
A 14-year-old boy who worked at the station was trapped in the workers’ changing room. He was rescued by 1122 officials and taken to the hospital. The fire was put out. Police said the owner of the petrol pump fled the scene. Students attending a summer camp at an adjacent school building were evacuated using the back gate and by climbing on to roofs of adjacent houses.
