KARACHI: Idle gossip and designer clothes dominated yet another evening in Karachi as designers, models and actors turned out for the launch of Rukaiya Adamjee’s salon. The salon is located in what has become the new ‘it’ district - Clifton Block 4 - which also houses Cafe Flo, Koel, Saffron, The Patio and Ensemble.

Even though she has been associated with the make-up industry for the past 18 years, Rukaiya Adamjee says she has been away for the last 12 years because “my children were small and needed me.”

But Adamjee is in full gear now. “Alhamdullilah, it’s doing well,” she told The Express Tribune at the packed event. “The key things that women look for are the quality services we offer in hair colour and make-up.”

The launch also featured a make-up show. The reason, she said was because, “There’s a lack of good bridal make-up, that’s why we thought of doing a show. I would love to (do make-up for fashion shows). Good quality of make-up is being offered at the salon at a reasonable price. I believe and I know that every bride wants to look nice on her special day.”

On the subject of models, Rukaiya Adamjee said, “I have worked with many models but Nadia Hussain, Iraj Mansoor, Aamina Shiekh, Ayaan and Vinny (Vaneeza Ahmed) are the best.”

A Karma-clad Frieha Altaf said she was “very happy” for Adamjee, while Arjumand Rahim (in an H&M shirt) had arrived to the event after a shoot for a play.

As sushi platters went around, conversation turned to work and gossip.

Designer Shehla Chatoor was spotted deep in conversation with Nadia Hussain. “Oh, busy with the wedding season,” she told The Express Tribune. “It is madness!”

While Ayaan flitted around in an animal print dress (which she also wore to the Labels/Studio 8 launch in Dubai), Fayeza Ansari, sporting a platinum blonde hairdo, laughed off a question posed to her by a journalist about whether she had gotten married, as a joke. She didn’t model for the bridal make-up segment saying, “With platinum hair, I won’t be a good bride!”
