Playing with lives: Five quacks arrested, several hospitals sealed
Operation theatre staff found practising as doctors.
BAHAWALPUR:
Five people were arrested on Sunday on charge of quackery and several private hospitals and clinics sealed in a Health Department raid following complaints from citizens.
District Health Officer Muhammad Saeed Asghar led the team.
Two people were arrested in a raid at a private hospital in Dilawar Colony. Police said Muhammad Ehsan and his wife Parveen Bibi had been running the Bismillah Surgical Hospital for several years. They were allegedly preparing for a surgery when the hospital was raided. Police said it was later discovered that Ehsan was an operation theatre assistant at Bahawal Victoria Hospital. Police said medicines with BVH stamps on the packages were also recovered during the raid.
They said a few days ago, a woman had died in labour at Ehsan’s hospital after she had had a still birth.
In a raid at Asim Mukhtar Surgical Hospital in Asghar Colony in Abbassia Town, police arrested Asim Mukhtar, a BVH post-mortem assistant and a grade 4 servant. It was also learnt that he had been running a pharmacy at the hospital using a fake licence.
Elsewhere, Sheikh Muhammad Iqbal was arrested for running a maternity centre along with his wife Rubina. Both were untrained and had been in business for several years.
FIRs were registered against those arrested.
Talking to the reporters later, Executive District Officer (Health) Ehsanullah Warraich and the district officer said that the crackdown against quacks would continue and let or discrimination.
