The budget for year 2013-14 presented by Minster of Finance Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman is worth Rs897.5 billion.
“We are willing to meet challenges facing the government head-on,” said Rehman.
Below is the breakdown of amount allocated to major sectors. The amounts are rounded to the nearest billion.
Chief Minister House will have its expenditure cut down by 30%, Rehman said.
Minimum wage was set at Rs10,000.
Under the new budget, government employees will see a salary increase of 10%.
Restrictions were announced on the purchase of government cars.
The Punjab budget is interesting because this is the first time since the fiscal 2008 budget that Lahore and Islamabad are being governed by the same political party.
For the past five years, the PML-N has been complaining that the problems in their province have been caused by an uncooperative federal government. Now that excuse no longer exists and the PML-N will be free to pursue its desired policies in Punjab, knowing that they have the full backing of Islamabad.
The white paper of the Punjab budget 2013-2014 can be found here.

Not a Handsome amount for the education it means PMLN don't have any interest in the education. where is " Para Likha Punjab " ooh Sory i have forgotten i m also the member of this fool nation Alas!
Punjab’s voters have rewarded the PML-N with re-election because they ran the province well
it is surprising that the PML(N) has allocated high amount on security.Punjab is not much affected from militancy as compare to others three provinces. need clearification
@Usama: Once in a while you should visit the planet called earth -
As others have pointed out here
Education budget(s):
Punjab: 210 billion - which accounts for approx. 24% KPK: 66 billion - which accounts for approx. 19%
@Mazher Mehboob: Clearly more educated people would results in less absurd comments on express tribune :)
Can't compare two provinces here. The reason why the budget allocation in education by Punjab is less than KP is because Punjab has more than 80% enrollment rate and KP has less than 50%. Also more than 1,000 schools have been destroyed or damaged by talibans in KP and FATA. That's why there is a strong need of more budget allocation in KP and it's a very good step and we all must appreciate this. But we shouldn't be comparing this with Punjab.
Budgetary Comparison Punjab Budget size 871 Billion KPK 344 Billion
Education Punjab 210 Billion (24% of total Budget) (43 Billion Development+ salaries etc) KPK 66 Billion (19% of total budget) (All combined no distinction available) Health Punjab 82 Billion (9.4% of total budget) KPK 22.8 Billion (6.67% of total budget) Agriculture Punjab 13 Billion (1.5%) KPK 2.91 Billion (0.08%) Law enforcement infrastructure Punjab 73 Billion (8.38%) KPK 23 Billion (6.69%)
@Muhammad Usman: Does that 23% percent of punjab include laptop scheme and danish schools allocation?
@Next: I feel pity for PTIians.
ET you intentionally put the wrong figures or what??. Kindly proof read otherwise many people will sue you in future to spread Disinformation by wrong figures. The total sum in 882 billion so how come you are giving such figures.??
A good start I should say. Allocating money is the first step. The next step is to have the vision on how to best use this money, and finally the execution. I hope that the 210 billion for education is not spent on building Danish schools and distributing lollipops (laptops).
Did PMLN played some game
Before budget, newspapers quoting 28.6 billion education budget!!!!
http://www.thenews.com.pk/Todays-News-5-184116-Punjab-to-present-Rs890b-budget-today
Anyone knows the truth???
As per budget white paper on Finance Department, Government of Punjab website, total education budget is Rs 239 Billion.
incorrect figure, reporting and comments
210 billion for education. 83 billion for health
Ok so they increase the salary to Rs.10000, but do not decrease the per unit cost of electricity which they have insanely increased since the last 3 years. How will the avg income earner pay for utility despite this increase in salary by a mere 2000 rupees?
But have they budgeted for power cuts? It would appear they're playing with the Khargil-like malfeasance of KPK juxtapositions. May we be saved from the constant Ameen-ing contained within this abstruse financial prolixity. For example, 3.142 billion dollars were to be allocated to the pie!
@usama Punjab Previous eudctaion budget was 195billionPKR. this year they increased it to 210Billion PKR.
Basically in other provincial they added salaries with development funding. while for Punjab its only development money which is 26BillionPKR.
@Usama: have knowledge of entire budget ... nearly 210 billion for education... n Punjab has been goin well to achienve UN MDPs i.e. 85% literacy rate 2018 ( google UN report ) ... get the facts before ur analysis :)
@ Ali
These figures are not true. The budget for education is actually 210 billion. These figures are wrong to jang or duniya to see this.
This may be the most pathetic budget presented ever in the history of Pakistan. A large sum of money is not allocated which means it will be used by MPAs to cover up their election campaign expenditure. The education and health allocations are a big joke with this nation. Thank you all for voting to these stupids.
Well job n keep it up. people preferred your govt over a face book based party
Such an irresponsible journalism by ET. totally contradict with those presented on jang/news.
"The provincial government has allocated Rs 210 billion for education, Rs 82 billion for health and Rs 13 billion for agriculture."
http://www.thenews.com.pk/article-105679-Punjab-govt-unveils-Rs-882-billion-budget-
Education budget 210b. Here is proof http://jang.com.pk/jang/jun2013-daily/17-06-2013/u149990.htm
For education its 210 billion. So data given by ET is wrong.
Last year, total Punjab education budget was Rs. 195 Billion i.e. 25% of budget outlay http://www.pildat.org/publications/publication/budget/UnderstandingPunjabEducationBudget2012-2013-ABriefforPAPStandingCommitteeonEducation.pdf
ET keep that in mind if these figures aren't true, I'm going to sue you.
By comparison, this is the worst budget of the four presented so far. Even worse than the federal budget. Nothing worth mentioning.
We have 66 billion for education in KP and Punjab allocates 25 billion? How is it possible? Is ET mistaken or the Punjab government?
These are not correct figures.
I just calculated. Out of Rs. 882 billion, Rs. 616.2 billion is unaccounted? What to expect from it? More money laundering and properties in Park Lane and Mayfair?
ET Please publish this !!
The total budget is 882 billion but the breakdown given adds up to 242 billion. Please fix the error quickly ET.
@2414: the sharifs are spending so much on security because unlike their fanboys here they know the likely outcome of their policies.
Education Budget is too low ! and so is health budget. KPK govt. (PTI) has allocated 66 billion for Education while Punjab govt. (PMLN) has allocated only 25 billion. The population of Punjab is more than three times more than KPK and yet the education and health budgets are low . One reason for keeping the education budget low may be that they don't want people to become literate. Because once people become literate they will vote PTI and will no longer be illiterates and vote PMLN.
i am a PTI supporter but Punjab budget seems preety good. Well done Shahbaz and team. I love this great competition between KPK and Punjab.
How the government can help in raising the salaries of employees in private sector, particularly for non-wage earners. In the past years the salaries of government servants has out-smarted salaries of private sector employees.
Well Done Shahbaz Sharif!
Unlike health and education, police salaries are included in their budget (here probably police and home department budgets combined as 'security'). Inclusion/exclusion of salaries from budget heads is old budget format.
y they are spending so much on security?
Why do we have education budget higher than health?
Well done Shahbaz sharif , we love you
Need more amount for clean water system 70% health problem in Punjab are related to the unclean water.
Unlike KPK and Sindh, salaries of education department and health department employees are not shown under education and health heads (salaries make nearly 90% of the expenditure in those areas).
need more amount for clean water system - 70% health problem related to water in punjab
"Chief Minister House will have its expenditure cut down by 30%, Rehman said."
They think we are idiots? If they could have reduced it, why didn't in the last 5 years? Who is going to be accountable of this extra spending if this could be cut down?
