LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly presented its fiscal budget on Monday, Express News reported.

The budget for year 2013-14 presented by Minster of Finance Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman is worth Rs897.5 billion.

“We are willing to meet challenges facing the government head-on,” said Rehman.

Below is the breakdown of amount allocated to major sectors. The amounts are rounded to the nearest billion.

Chief Minister House will have its expenditure cut down by 30%, Rehman said.

Minimum wage was set at Rs10,000.

Under the new budget, government employees will see a salary increase of 10%.

Restrictions were announced on the purchase of government cars.

The Punjab budget is interesting because this is the first time since the fiscal 2008 budget that Lahore and Islamabad are being governed by the same political party.

For the past five years, the PML-N has been complaining that the problems in their province have been caused by an uncooperative federal government. Now that excuse no longer exists and the PML-N will be free to pursue its desired policies in Punjab, knowing that they have the full backing of Islamabad.

Iqbal | 10 years ago | Reply The so-called ‘LUXURY TAX imposed in the name of ‘Robin Hoodism’ by the Punjab Government is in essence nothing short of ‘Jugga Tax’ or Bhatta! The trillionaire, Mr. Shahbaz Sharif probably didn’t realize that most or some of the residences were old family homes which the owners were maintaining at considerable cost and effort. A hugh levy of this magnitude is contrary to all tax cannons and hence can only be termed as ‘Bhatta’. This bhatta is a cruelty of the worst kind inflicted on the ‘Safaid Posh’ people of the Punjab. I request the honorable and kind Chief Justice of Pakistan to take notice of this open act of cruelty against human rights where people, on account of such a burden, may be forced to sell their property and hence be deprived of their family heritage and a secure roof above their heads. This Bhatta is simply beyond the capability of a lot of such home owners. Above all, I pray to God for his kind and gracious help in making the Punjab government realize the sheer absurdity of the levy and to make it reconsider and rethink about i’ts attitude towards requesting and not demanding for a much more reasonable donation.
