Reactions: Rights activists happy with budget

Expressing satisfaction with the 2013-2014 budget, women rights activists have welcomed the government’s announcement to pay for backward areas’ students’ higher education.
Addressing a seminar on Thursday, several representatives of NGOs working for women’s rights said the decision would drastically improve literacy rate in rural areas. Activist Saman Malik stressed the need for implementation of the decision. She said the decision to provide free of cost education to the under-privileged children would help eliminate child labour.
Saima Shafiq, a programme officer at the Pakistan Human Development Organisation, lauded the Ramazan package. Surraiyah Faiz from the Awaz Foundation lauded the prospective release of funds to reduce loadshedding. She said given the challenges Pakistan was currently facing, the government had announced a “balanced budget”.
