SUKKUR: A public awareness campaign against the “atrocities” of Sukkur Electric Power Company (Sepco) will be launched from October 1, announced the speakers at a seminar on Wednesday.

The seminar was organised by Tanzeem-e-Pakistan, a newly founded organisation working for civic problems in Sukkur.

The speakers declared that if the electricity issue is not resolved, they will go to court. They condemned over- reading of electricity meters, inflated bills and unannounced power outages.

The speakers said that the electricity tariff is raised every month yet the people are burdened with rolling blackouts and high bills. When consumers complain at Sepco offices, they are simply advised to pay the current bill, with promises of solving the problem next month, said one speaker.

Electric meters are installed on poles far away from the consumers’ houses so that additional readings can be obtained, they said.

The seminar attended by the office bearers of several political, social, religious and trade organisations, including founder president of Tanzeem-e-Pakistan Dr Saeed Awan, Musharraf Mehmood Qadri of Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan, Saeed Ahmed Khoso of Sunni Tehreek, Allah Dad Bozdar of Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz, Shahzado Bhutto of Sindh National Front, Abdul Sattar Brohi of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam -Samiul Haq and Baharuddin Shaikh of Sukkur Small Traders.
