MULTAN:

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has come up with an aggressive strategy for restructuring the company as losses for the last eight years accumulate to Rs200 billion said chairman of the airline.

Secretary Defence and chairman of PIA Lieutenant-General (retd) Asif Yasin Malik was addressing the Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday.

“We are flying the wrong aircraft on wrong routes,” he said, adding that they were going to buy eight new aircraft by October or December this year. He disclosed that PIA had not added new aircraft to its fleet for a decade.

Speaking of Multan International Airport’s completion, the chairman announced that it will be operational by the first quarter of 2014.”It is too big for today. However, it will need expansion after 2025,” he added. Malik added that incoming Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was keenly interested in steering the country out of crisis and had also devised a plan for PIA.
