BAHAWALPUR:

A man was arrested on Friday shortly after he shot dead his pregnant wife and mother-in-law in Yazman. His wife’s sister-in-law was also injured in the incident and taken to a hospital, where she was reported to be in critical condition.

Police said the suspect had gone to his in-laws’ house to bring back his wife, who had left his house a few days ago following an argument.

A case has been registered on the complaint of the woman’s father Muhammad Aslam Mughal.

Mughal, a resident of Chak 101-DB, told police that his daughter Naseem Bibi had married Muhammad Boota, a resident of Chak 112-DB, six years ago and had three children. He said they quarrelled frequently and that Boota had sent her to her parents’ house several times. He said every time he had taken her back.

A few days ago, Mughal said, they quarrelled again and Naseem Bibi left home and started living with her parents.

On Friday, Mughal said, when Boota came to take her back, she refused to go with him. He said Boota then accused his mother-in-law of poisoning Naseem Bibi’s brain against him. This led to another argument and Boota shot his wife and her mother. Naseem Bibi’s sister-in-law, Bindiya Bibi, who tried to stop him, was also hit.

Bindiya Bibi was taken to tehsil headquarters hospital, where doctors treating her said that she was in critical condition.

Neighbours gathered outside the house on hearing gunshots and informed the police.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Mehmood Shahid and Station House Officer Ghulam Mohiuddin Gujjar visited the scene and the bodies were sent for a post-mortem examination.

Pickets were set up in the area and the suspect arrested shortly after the incident.

Police said he had confessed to the killings.
