ISLAMABAD:

Capital Development Authority Chairman Tahir Shahbaz left for Turkey on Monday to attend the two-day World Mayors Meeting in Istanbul, which starts on Wednesday.

The 2013 World Mayors Meeting has been organized by the Istanbul International Solid Waste, Water and Wastewater Congress, with the mayors of over 35 municipalities from across the globe participating.

The CDA chairman told The Express Tribune that the aim of the conference is to engage in a multi-stakeholder dialogue, exchange experiences and seek common solutions to solid waste and water-related problems in questions.

At the end of the two-day meeting, the mayors and local authorities attending from different countries are expected to sign the Istanbul Solid Waste Consensus, which aims to implement sustainable solid waste management strategies against global changes.

Shahbaz said he would try to resolve water-related issues and solid waste problems in Islamabad in the light of the discussions in Istanbul.

It would be a welcome change, as past chairmen Imtiaz Inayat Elahi and Farkhand Iqbal enthusiastically participated in the annual conference, but the knowledge they acquired did not seem to trickle down to the agency.

In the absence of Tahir Shahbaz, who will return on Friday, CDA Finance Member Azhar Ali Chaudhry will be the acting chairman.

According to the official Istanbul International Solid Waste, Water and Wastewater Congress website, the meeting will provide a platform where cities’ and local governments’ problems regarding solid waste, water and wastewater will be discussed, along with success stories providing solutions to these problems.
