Drone attacks: ‘Cast off American shackles’

The new government must prohibit drone strikes on Pakistani territory, says Hassan.

LAHORE:
The newly elected leaders will have to deal with Washington’s policy of drone attacks in Pakistan, a statement by Jamaat-i-Islami ameer Syed Munawar Hassan on Sunday read. Hassan said the protection of its citizens’ lives was the foremost responsibility of a government. The drone attacks, he said, made a mockery of the sovereignty and independence of Pakistan. If the new government continued to support the policy like Musharraf and Zardari did, its popularity would soon turn to people’s hatred, he said.  The new government must disassociate its self from the War on Terror and prohibit drone strikes on Pakistani territory, Hassan said. Sharif must adopt a bold stance in accordance with the people’s aspirations, he said, and make it clear that drone attacks would not be tolerated.
