GILGIT: At least one labourer was killed and three others, including two Chinese engineers, were injured in a landslide while working near the Attabad Lake spillway in Hunza on Wednesday.

Fida Ali, a resident of Nomal valley, Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), died after being hit by a stone, while Niyat Jan, a resident of Ghizer valley, was injured.

“They were working on a tunnel when they were hit by stones and boulders,” said Rehman Shah, Hunza’s assistant commissioner, adding that the two Chinese engineers are out of danger.

The incident occurred as Labour Day was being observed across the country and the world in recognition of labour rights.

CRBC, a Chinese road construction company, is working on constructing a tunnel from Attabad to Gojal as an alternative to the Karakoram Highway, part of which has submerged after a landslide formed a lake on the Hunza River.

In a similar incident in January 2010, at least 19 people were killed in a landslide near Attabad village adjacent to Hunza, which is about 120 kilometers from Gilgit.

Very sad news. Prayers for the souls to rest in eternal peace Fifteen 15 days work which was promised by the then governor took 1100 days and the lake still stands up there in the Karakorum mountains.
