ISLAMABAD: As per the Constitution 20 seats in the National Assembly were reserved for women. The seats were distributed among the provinces: 12 for Punjab, four for Sindh, and two each for Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

Elections for these seats were held on the basis of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote under the Electoral College consisting of people elected for the National Assembly from that particular province.

The Election Commission scheduled the election for the women reserved seats for November 26, 1988. Around 28 women from Punjab submitted their nominations for the 12 reserved seats in the province.

Four nominations were filed from Khyber-Pakhtunkwa. Later, one of the contestants withdrew leaving three candidates to contest for the two reserved seats in the province. Four women contested the election from Balochistan.

Sindh earlier saw five women contesting for the four reserved seats in the province. However, one of the candidates withdrew resulting in the unopposed election of all the candidates from the province. The names of the candidates were notified on November 30, 1988.
