Industry members protest against new tax
Exporters outraged at 2% value added tax, threaten strikes.

Trade and industry leaders opposed the imposition of a 2% tax on exports on Wednesday and called for an early withdrawal of SRO 154(I) 2013. Members of Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA), Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association (PHMA), Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), Anjuman-e-Tajran Pakistan and other trade and industry associations met here under the Chairmanship of Lahore Chambers of Commerce and Industry President Farooq Iftikhar and protested against the issuance of anti-business SROs.
Prominent among the participants were Central Chairman of PHMA Javaid Bilwani, Chairman PTA Agha Saidain, LCCI Senior Vice President Irfan Iqbal Sheikh, Vice President Mian Abuzar Shad, Chairman PHMA Adil Butt, former LCCI president Sheikh Muhammad Asif, former senior vice president Malik Tahir Javed and executive committee members.
During the meeting, the participants also decided to hold a meeting with the caretaker prime minister against the imposition of a 2% value added tax on all five zero-rated sectors. They also decided to launch a media campaign against the controversial SRO.
Speaking on the occasion, LCCI President Farooq Iftikhar said that all options, including a call for strike, a dharna in Islamabad and hoisting black flags on industrial unit, are open for the business community.
