The blast took place outside the Rangers Headquarters in the area. The headquarters is situated near a residential area.
Express News correspondent Nadeem Khan said that according to bomb disposal squad, a bomb weighing 1.5 kilogrammes was planted near the gate and blew up when the truck neared it. The bomb was also packed with nuts and bolts.
"It was a bomb blast, the target seems to be a van of carrying soldiers," police official Karim Khan told AFP.
"It was an attack on the Rangers' pickup truck," senior police officer Tahir Naveed confirmed.
As a result of the attack, eight Rangers personnel were injured. The injured were moved to the Sindh government hospital and then to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). Four of these though died of their injuries.
Shortly after the blast firing was heard and Rangers cordoned off the area. Heavy contingents of Rangers, police as well as rescue services arrived at the scene.
The bomb disposal squad reached the site almost half an hour after the blast.
The Rangers have been involved in a number of search operations against criminals and militants in the city during recent months.
Taliban claim responsibility for attack
Spokesperson for the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Ehsanullah Ehsan said the Taliban carried out the attack in Korangi as part of its policy to target the security forces.
"We claim responsibility for the attack on the Rangers in Karachi," the TTP spokesperson told The Express Tribune by telephone.
"The targeted security forces are working for a secular system," Ehsan said.
He added that the Taliban will keep on attacking the security forces.

Pakistan’s ‘Strategic Assets” have become freedom fighters. Victory is within their sights.
people in pakistan are beginning to awake to these violent thugs who are using Islam as a front to carry out their criminal activities
"Spokesperson for the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Ehsanullah Ehsan said the Taliban carried out the attack in Korangi as part of its policy to target the security forces." These cannot be Taliban, who are true Muslims. Muslims do not kill Muslims. TTP and spokesman are Indian agents and not even Muslims. Let us find the real culprit and talk to Taliban about peace and security as most of our rightwing leaders suggest!
What has happned to sindh,we sindhis in INDIA are deeply anxious about our motherland.May god give peace to brave souls and allow a new chapter of peace and compassion.
All peace loving people of karachi come out and crush these terrorists and their extremist ideologies.
“The targeted security forces are working for a secular system,” Ehsan said.
This must be the greatest insult for Pakistanis.
Imagine someone calling them 'Secular'.
Rangers are doing great job to restore the peace of Karachi.
May Al-mighty Allah rest their soul in peace. Ameen.
Nothing... really noting could beat them
Solute to the bravery of rangers.
Rangers keep your good continue! we need to get rid of these animals
It is not surprising that the ruthless terrorists are targeting the Rangers, who in the last month or so have killed and nabbed many of the terrorists’ leaders and members from various parts of Karachi. Earlier today, two confessed terrorists who were involved in many murders across the city including a college principal and professor, who was shot down last month, were arrested by the security forces. Karachi is economic hub of Pakistan, and unless Karachi is peaceful, Pakistan remains volatile. The terrorists know this and are creating mayhem in the city. We share a common stance against terrorism, and fully support Pakistan in its fight against the extremist organizations. We commend the brave rangers who lost their lives in this cowardly act of terror. We hope that their friends and families will find the strength to deal with their loss.
