Plans for new Balochistan universities dropped

Plans for establishing two new universities in Balochistan have been dropped because of financial constraints.

QUETTA:
Plans for establishing two new universities in Balochistan have been dropped by the Planning Commission for the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2010-11.

According to university officials, the Planning Commission rationalised the PSDP 2010-11 following a decision made by the National Economic Council (NEC), which disapproved the proposed new universities in Kech (Turbat) and Loralai districts because of financial constraints.

President Asif Ali Zardari had announced a plan to establish a university in Turbat when he met Baloch notables, intellectuals and prominent people at the beginning of the reconciliation process in Balochistan in 2009.

The varsity had also set up two university campuses in Kech and Loralai districts two years ago and concerned MPAs and senators had also provided assistance to build full-fledged universities. Both were set up in order to provide higher education to students of remote areas and to reduce the overwhelming burden of students at the University of Balochistan in Quetta.
