Pakistan flopped miserably against the world number one Test team, losing the first Test by 211 runs, the second by four wickets and the last by an innings and 18 runs.
Whatmore masterminded Sri Lanka's triumph in the 1996 World Cup and led minnows Bangladesh to their first-ever Test series victory and their first appearance in the World Cup Super Eights in 2007.
But Khan said he was not up to the job.
"Whatmore is an overrated coach," Khan told AFP. "There is a concept in Pakistan that a foreigner will not get involved in players' politics but Whatmore is now fighting for survival."
Former Australian batsman Whatmore took over in March last year and led Pakistan to the semi-finals of the World Twenty20 tournament, but he has come under fire after two successive Test series defeats.
Khan, who managed only four wins in his 13 matches as Pakistan captain, said Sri Lanka's World Cup win in 1996 owed more to its players than Whatmore.
"Ask any player of that team and he will tell you that in 1996 Sri Lanka had world-class players and their success was due to their players and not because of the coach," said Moin.
Khan also criticised Test and one-day captain Misbahul Haq.
"Both coach and captain are fighting for survival. They should have a plan and a vision with which they should leave the team on a firm footing but I can't see any plan. Instead, they keep their interests before the team."
Pakistan has never been short of cricketing talent but the national team has suffered over the years from bickering and infighting. Khan, who played 69 Tests, said a foreign coach could not communicate with the players properly.
"When a foreigner is our coach, our players have a communication problem and the coach is also unable to brief the players on their mistakes and it's a big problem," said Khan, a member of the World Cup-winning team in 1992.
Khan said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had blundered in replacing Mohsin Khan with Whatmore last year.
"Pakistan players were happy in Mohsin's coaching," said Khan of the former coach, under whom Pakistan routed the then-world number one Test team England in January last year.
"If Whatmore doesn't resign himself, then the PCB should sack him," he added.
Pakistan play the first of two Twenty20 internationals against South Africa at Durban on Friday. They also play five one-day internationals on the tour.

The problem with Paki team is they don't want domestic coach & if they get they won't listen to local coach.
I am at loss to understand the logic of out burst from the so called experts appearing on TV or giving comments during play.Apart from ,few like IMRAN,MIANDAD,ZAHEER or WASIM, what was their contribution to the Pakistan cricket. If they were so smart, intelligent and had the know how of every other situation as happening on the field, why were they nothing but mediocre. what was their best career standing among the great of their time. Are like of MOIN.RASHID LATIFand JALALUDDIN really cricket genius,i very much doubt it.Why are not coaching first class playing team in PAKISTAN.AS for MOHSIN ,is he really a coach or a couch. All he achieved was victories on docile wicket in UAE and nothing more.Let WHATMORE and his team do their work .
After the series in India, we wanted to make Whatmore the President of the country and Misbah the prime minister...now we want to sack him cuz how dare did we lose to the best team in the league. Hmm....coming from a captain who won 4 of 13 tests that if whatmore doesnt resign, PCB should sack him...I wonder where this thinking was when he was losing tests as a captain. I had immense respect for moin as a player and i did not expect this from him, but i guess...our ex players have their own personal agenda to push.
Obsession with foreign coach is leading us no where. Mohsin khan was doing an excellent job before he was ruthlessly removed. How can one remove a coach after white wash? To me i think if the team is handed over back to mohsin he will start producing results.
That's what you would expect from an ex pakistani player, to them the only solution to everything sacking everybody.
Whatmore has been coaching Pakistan for less than a year, and pakistan have made progress in fielding.
P.S you shouldn't forget the series in India.
Yes we should have a new coach in every series.
It is absurd and funny that you do not accept The opposite teams better performance and your poor but ask to fire the coach. Shame on you
India lost to England and to Pakistan and there were also demands for resignations, but BCCI remained focused and was not perturbed to those demands. What we need to realise is that our team is not getting enough test matches and on top of that when you ask them to take field against the number one team in the world on hostile and bouncy pitches the result was expected. For the last two years this team has been giving us good results despite all the odds, we should give them time and they will bring back smiles on our faces.
@Fudge: Good point. lool. But it sounds cynical. Should we always go to South Africa with our backs to the wall? cheers:)
to Moin Khan......like you guys ever won consistently in SA that you are now asking for Watmore to be sacked?! Cricket is not a level playing field. It is influenced too much by home conditions, simple as that! Our team is good, yes, there are some shortcomings, too, but we would take them over the instability/inconsistency that was the hallmark of players of your era and you are trying to take us back to that chop and change-at-the-drop-of-a-hat strategy. At least this is a stable team with a consistent support/coaching staff. Please don't destabilize this team by bringing back the 90s and the 2000s.
Instead of putting up blame on poor coaches, this time the blame should be put on the right people who always get away, the selectors. Why they selected Faisal Iqbal, Ehsan Adil, Rahat Ali, and Imran Farhat on an important tour. This crippled the captain, coach and team management from feeling comfortable with their choices.
perhaps moin is in interested in coaching himself....But Whatmore is not the captain of Pak cricket team..he is a coach so why would you remove him? If PCB has real guts then they should fire a failed batsman Imran Farhat who has been given thousand times chances to prove his critics wrong, but he failed badly...be it australia, sri lanka, newzealnd, england, South africa ..he has toured every country and played them and failed miserably in tests. Misabahul Haque is another problem, he is now technically incapable of playing Tests. The bottom line is that After inzamam ul haque, Saeed Anwar Pakistan doesn't have any capable batsemn to fill their vacant places and this is the main reason why they are loosing. Coaching is a non issue , the real issue is Batting.Their is no quality batsman in Pakistan Team. If Pakistan cricket board wastes talent like Riffatullah Muhammad who scored massive centuries in domestic cricket without being given one single chance to prove himself against international sided. Pakistan cricket will only loose.
In other words, Moin is saying Sack Whatmore & Hire me as a Coach... lol
Its unfair to demand Watmore sacking... Ridiculous demand. What our demand should be from the Govt. to create such environment that team could come and play home test cricket. Our demand should be to have cricket board like australian are having...
Its really not whatmore who we should be blaming, south africa is a really tough place to play cricket...and SA are at their peak kinda like how australia was. Junaid khan was injured, umar gul didnt perform that well and our batting line mostly apart from a few glimpses of great batting we got every now and then. They just need to go through a lot more drills to be able to play in an environment like the SA pitches.
